Gustaf III (1746ÿ1792) was King of Sweden from 1771 until his assassination in 1792. A strong and ambitious ruler. he is best known for modernizing Sweden through enlightened reforms and consolidating royal power. In 1772. he orchestrated a bloodless coup. ending parliamentary rule and strengthening the monarchy. He introduced legal and economic reforms. promoted religious tolerance. and was a great patron of the arts. However. his authoritarian rule and costly war against Russia made him unpopular among the nobility. He was assassinated at a masked ball in 1792. an event that inspired Verdi’s opera Un Ballo in Maschera.

Reverse: Crowned lined orb with the Three Crowns of Sweden within the Chain of the Order of Seraphims. below. the Chain pendant divides the date and mintmark. with the value on either side of the orb. and the King’s motto above.
